Living in Travelers Rest, SC: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re thinking about moving to Travelers Rest, South Carolina, you’re not alone. Over the last few years, I’ve had more relocation clients ask about Travelers Rest than almost any other Greenville-area town.

And honestly — I get why.

Travelers Rest (or “TR,” as locals call it) offers something you don’t find everywhere: a true small-town feel, incredible outdoor access, and quick proximity to both downtown Greenville and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

As a local real estate team that helped over 130 families buy or sell homes last year — many relocating from out of state — we spend a lot of time helping clients evaluate whether Travelers Rest is actually the right fit.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through:
• What it’s really like living in Travelers Rest
• Real estate trends and housing options
• Lifestyle, location, and daily convenience
• Pros and cons (honestly)
• Who TR is best for (and who it’s not)

Let’s break it down.

Where Is Travelers Rest, SC?

Travelers Rest sits just 8 miles (about 15 minutes) north of downtown Greenville along US-25.

It’s also positioned:
• About 1 hour from Asheville, NC
• About 25 minutes to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP)
• At the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains
• Along the northern anchor of the Swamp Rabbit Trail

Unlike flatter Greenville suburbs like Simpsonville, Travelers Rest has noticeably rolling terrain, mountain views in many neighborhoods, and winding country roads like State Park Road that give the area its character.

And in the fall? It’s one of the most beautiful places in the Upstate.

What Is It Like Living in Travelers Rest?
A True Small-Town Feel (That Still Feels Connected)

Travelers Rest still feels like a small town — and that’s exactly why many people move here.

Downtown TR is centered around a walkable Main Street filled with locally owned businesses, restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops. It’s not overly commercialized, and the community vibe is strong.

Some of my favorite local spots include:
• Leopard Forest Coffee Company
• Sushi Yama
• Sidewall Pizza (Pro tip: join their members club — $5/month gets you $20 off monthly)
• Swamp Rabbit Brewery
• Tandem Creperie & Coffeehouse
• Sunrift Adventures

There’s also a holistic veterinary clinic here — which we’ve personally used for our dog — and that kind of local, relationship-driven feel really defines the town.

The Swamp Rabbit Trail: One of TR’s Biggest Draws

One of the biggest lifestyle advantages in Travelers Rest is direct access to the 22-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail, which connects downtown TR to downtown Greenville.

The trail:
• Follows a converted rail line
• Runs directly through downtown Travelers Rest
• Connects restaurants, parks, and retail areas
• Is heavily used for biking, running, and walking

For many buyers relocating here — especially from larger cities — this becomes part of their daily routine.

Outdoor Lifestyle & Community Events

If you prioritize outdoor living, TR checks a lot of boxes.

You’re just minutes from:
• Paris Mountain State Park (hiking, biking, paddleboarding)
• Table Rock State Park
• Blue Ridge Parkway access points
• Local parks hosting farmers markets and seasonal festivals

There’s also close proximity to Furman University, whose campus and Furman Golf Club are popular with locals.

The lifestyle here is active, outdoorsy, and community-driven.

Travelers Rest Market

From a real estate perspective, Travelers Rest offers a wider range of housing options than many people expect.

You’ll find:
• Older ranch homes and established neighborhoods
• New construction communities
• Acreage properties and custom builds
• Walkable townhome developments

Pinestone: One of the Biggest Developments in Greenville County
Pinestone Community copy RESIZED

One of the biggest projects shaping Travelers Rest right now is Pinestone, a roughly 50-acre redevelopment site below Paris Mountain.

The plan includes:
• Apartments and townhomes
• Single-family housing
• Retail and restaurants
• Walkable streets and shared green space

The goal is to create a more urban, walkable lifestyle while still maintaining TR’s charm. For buyers who want newer construction and amenities, this will be one to watch over the next several years.

Pros of Living in Travelers Rest
1. Mountain Views & Rolling Topography
You simply don’t get this terrain in most Greenville suburbs.
2. Outdoor Access
Between the Swamp Rabbit Trail and nearby state parks, TR is ideal for active buyers.
3. Small-Town Atmosphere
The pace is slower, quieter, and more community-driven.
4. Strategic Location
Close to Greenville while also serving as the gateway to Asheville.

Cons of Living in Travelers Rest (Honest Take)
1. Limited Big-Box Retail Nearby
You’ll drive into Greenville for Costco, Target, or major shopping.
2. Fewer Dining Options Than Greenville
While great locally, it’s not as extensive as downtown Greenville.
3. Commute Considerations
If you work in Simpsonville, Five Forks, or Greer, commute times can stretch to 35–45 minutes.

Who Travelers Rest Is Best For

In my experience working with relocation buyers, Travelers Rest is ideal for:
• Buyers prioritizing lifestyle over proximity to offices
• Outdoor enthusiasts
• Remote workers
• Retirees seeking slower pace and scenery
• Families wanting space and quieter surroundings

It may not be ideal for buyers who:
• Want dense suburban conveniences
• Need quick access to I-85 daily
• Prefer highly walkable urban environments

Is Travelers Rest Worth It?

For the right buyer, Travelers Rest is one of the most compelling places to live in the entire Upstate.

It’s not trying to be Greenville — and that’s exactly why people love it.

You get:
• Scenic beauty
• Community feel
• Outdoor lifestyle
• Growth potential

But like any area, it’s not one-size-fits-all. That’s why we always walk clients through tradeoffs based on their lifestyle and daily routines.
